Is transitioning to medical communications a good decision?

Are you an academic researcher, thinking of becoming a medical writer? Are you afraid to take the risk of transitioning to a new industry? I have been in academia, in research and teaching, for 12 years, and then I transitioned to the industry. Today, I’m going to reflect and share with you how I feel about my transition.

My journey from academia to the medical communications industry

I like diversity. As a medical writer, I get to do problem-solving, project management, writing, editing, and talking to clients. I get to work on regulatory aspects, creative aspects, and technical aspects. This diversity throughout the day and week keeps me encouraged and motivated. Unlike in the lab, where I felt there was less variation day to day and probably less fun for me.

I also like to see results faster. I need that quick and direct effect. As a medical writer, I think I now see my writings impacting people faster than what I have seen in my research life. I worked years after years before I could get to write the first draft of a manuscript.

I’m enjoying the learning aspect. I work in different therapeutic areas now, and even in the same therapeutic area, there are so many different aspects and clients, targets from HCPs to researchers to patients and consumers. So, there has been a lot of learning and many ways to express myself.

Even though I work sometimes at odd hours and weekends, I don’t have to go anywhere anymore. I don’t have to go to the lab on Christmas and early morning or late night when your project demands a 36-hour or 3-day surveillance, or you have to do the same thing for a few days or weeks at the same time. So, that’s liberating. I get to spend more time with my family.

Above everything, I love to help scientists who want to transition like me because I have been in their shoes. I have overcome the challenges that they are probably going to have very soon. So, helping them to bridge the gap gives me real satisfaction.

These are some of the things, among many, that I have been enjoying as a medical writer. If you think any of these aspects also resonate with you, I would encourage you to take the risk, be a bit courageous, and explore the medical writing industry.

If you have any questions about the transition, feel free to write in the comment box or reach out to me.
